Hey Reader Have you ever wondered why the preferred drilling time is the dry season? Did you know you can actually drill during the rainy season and still end up with a productive borehole? There's a common misconception that drilling during the rainy season hands you a dry hole once the dry season hits. Today, you'll discover why you can drill any time of the year, and the one real reason you should avoid drilling when it's raining. By the way, it has nothing to do with your borehole, and everything to do with a problem for the driller. This confusion stems from a basic misunderstanding of how underground water actually works. Whenever it rains, water seeps into the ground and forms a shallow water table, about 5 to 15 metres deep. If you've ever come across a hand-dug well (and I'm certain you have, unless you're outside Kenya), that's the source feeding it. These wells produce plenty of water during the rainy season but often run dry once the dry season sets in. Though we do have some phenomenal shallow wells that keep producing no matter the season, I'll explain those in a few weeks. Beyond that, there's a deep confined aquifer, starting anywhere beyond 70 metres depending on your location. This is the zone that gives you true water independence, a sustainable output that barely runs dry, unless a driller messes up. Whether you're drilling during the rainy season or the dry season, this deeper aquifer will always produce water. The only real reason to prefer the dry season comes down to mobilisation and site accessibility. If the roads leading to your land become inaccessible during the rainy season (as with most roads in rural Kenya), or your soil type, cotton soil for example, turns to thick mud when wet, drilling during the rains could mean the rig getting stuck with no stable ground to work from. Under those conditions, you'll pay much higher mobilisation fees, and your project stalls as the rig fights through the terrain. But if your soil and road conditions hold up well in the rain, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from drilling during the rainy season. That's it for today.
